Short Depth 1U
Just as the Mac mini has revolutionized the Mac server market, Short Depth 1U systems have revolutionized their piece of the 1U server market. Many types of servers do not need to be large 1U systems supporting many different components of all varieties.
Common examples of what Short Depth 1U systems are used for are:
- Web Server
- Mail Server
- Telephony Server running FreeSwitch or Asterisk
- Offsite Storage Server
- Firewall or other Security Server
- Gaming Server (i.e. Minecraft)
We recommend that our customers run a UNIX-like operating system rather than Windows on these servers. Great choices include:
- OpenBSD (our personal favorite)
- FreeBSD
- Ubuntu Server
- Debian
- CentOS
- RedHat Enterprise Linux
Some good examples of excellent short depth systems include a variety of models from SuperMicro. One examle is the SuperMicro X7SPE-HF-D525 (pictured above) built around an Atom D525 processor.
